WRS has been a leader in the Early Detection Saves Lives Coalition, which recently introduced Senate Bill 264/Assembly Bill 263, called Gail's Law in memory of Gail Zeamer. Gail's law would require Wisconsin health plans to provide no-cost coverage for both diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging like MRIs and ultrasounds. Diagnostic exams are needed by patients with abnormalities and supplemental exams are recommended for women who are at increased risk of breast cancer or have dense breast tissue.
Dr. Kattapuram wrote an excellent op-ed in support of Gail's Law, which ran in the Wisconsin State Journal earlier this week. Drs. Jennifer Bergin and Anand Narayan testified in favor of the bill before the Senate Committee on Health on May 28. We expect to see a Committee vote on Gail's Law within the next few days, after which it can be scheduled for a vote by the full Senate, which we hope to see in June.
You can watch a press conference on Gail's Law, which Dr. Bergin spoke at, here.
If you have not done so already, please contact your state senator and state representative and ask them to support Gail's Law! Find out who represents you here: https://maps.legis.wisconsin.gov/
